Botox® Costmetic and Dysport are FDA-approved nonsurgical facial injectables that temporarily reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles. Wrinkles of the glabella (vertical wrinkles between the eyebrows), forehead, and/or crows feet are most commonly treated. Botox® Costmetic and Dysport block the release of a neurotransmitter that allows muscles to contract. This causes relaxation of the muscles responsible for the unwanted wrinkles.
Unlike many physicians, Dr. Nguyen personally performs all injections. No two patients have exactly the same distribution or severity of wrinkles. Therefore, rather than following the manufacturers standardized chart of injection sites, Dr. Nguyen customizes the injections for each patient. She will mark and photograph the areas to be injected, so that the results can be duplicated (or modified, as needed) with future injections.
Watch wrinkles and frown lines disappear right before your eyes. This highly purified protein relaxes muscles to smooth and prevent lines around the eyes, between the brows, on the forehead and more. We also use BOTOX® Cosmetic to treat severe underarm sweating. BOTOX® Cosmetic is a treatment for wrinkles caused by repetitive facial expressions. Dysport is a simple, effective, non-surgical treatment that works by relaxing facial muscles, thereby reducing and smoothing away frown-lines and wrinkles. Dysport, like Botox Cosmetic® is a protein extracted from the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum.
Is Dysport New?
NO! Dysport has been available in Europe, Asia, and South America for over 10 years. Dysport is manufactured by Ipsen Pharmaceuticals (FRA) and is supported by over a decade of clinical experience. Dysport is distributed in the United States by Medicis, the manufacturers of the revolutionary Restylane dermal filler. Thousands of treatments have been safely and effectively performed for a variety of conditions ranging from facial wrinkles to axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating under the armpits).
Is Dysport Better Than Botox?
This topic is widely debated and heavily biased due to most comparative cosmetic studies being partially or fully funded by manufacturers of Botox (Allergan) and Dysport (Ipsen/Medicis). Many cosmetic physicians outside the U.S. who have used Dysport report greater longevity when compared to Botox.
How does Dysport work?
Dysport blocks impulses from the nerve to the facial muscles that are related to expression lines. Dysport relaxes the muscles so they do not contract. After treatment, the overlying skin becomes smooth and unwrinkled, while the untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion, allowing normal facial expression to be unaffected.
Are Botox® Cosmetic and Dysport safe?
All procedures involve some degree of risk. However, Botox® Cosmetic and Dysport both have a long track record of safe use, are approved for use in over 75 countries, and are FDA-approved for cosmetic use (for the lines between the brows).
How long do Botox® Cosmetic and Dysport last?
Most patients see improvement of wrinkles within 1 to 3 days of injection with Dysport and within 3 to 5 days with Botox. The results will usually last about 4 to 5 months. With repeated injections, a duration of 5 to 6 months is possible in some patients.
Remember that unlike surgery, Botox® Cosmetic and Dysport do not involve an irreversible change. The results, whether satisfactory or not, are temporary.
Will it make me look frozen?
Most patients want to look better, not different. Although it is possible to achieve a frozen look with high doses of Botox® Cosmetic or Dysport, Dr. Lguyen prefers to use these products conservatively, relaxing your wrinkles without making you look like plastic.
What is a chemical brow lift?
If you notice some sagging of the brows, selective Botox® Cosmetic or Dysport injection of the muscles adjacent to the brow can provide mild elevation while reducing wrinkles, providing a more rejuvenated forehead.
Whats the difference between Botox® Cosmetic and Restylane?
Botox® and Dysport reduce wrinkles by temporarily weakening overactice muscles. They work best for wrinkles between the eyebrows and in the forehead and crows feet.
Injectable fillers (Restylane, Juvederm) reduce wrinkles by adding volume to the tissues (like putty). These work best for the nasolabial folds (the folds between the nose and the corners of the mouth), marionette lines (folds below the corners of the mouth), and vertical lip wrinkles. They also may be used to fill volume deficiencies of the lips, jawline, and cheeks.
Frequently botulinum toxin and injectable fillers are used together to provide facial rejuvenation, either alone or in conjunction with surgical procedures.
One week before your appointment:
1. Do not take aspirin-containing products, as these may increase your risk of bruising. Use extra-strength Tylenol for any headaches or other minor pains. ***Before stopping aspirin or any anti-platelet/anti-clotting medications, you must discuss it with your primary care doctor or prescribing doctor first!
2. Please notify RejuveRX staff if you become sick with a fever, significant cough, etc. If necessary, your procedure can be rescheduled to a time when you are feeling better.
At home after the procedure:
To minimize bruising and to help keep the Botox® Cosmetic or Dysport precisely where it was injected:
1. You may wish to apply ice to the injected areas to minimize any bruising.
2. Do not perform exercise activities for at least 8 hours after your procedure.
3. Do not massage or manipulate the injected areas for at least 8 hours after your procedure.
4. Do not lie flat on your back for at least 4 hours after your procedure.
